Senate Urges Suspension of Politics Over Rising Insecurity

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to consider emergency measures, including the possible suspension of political activities in several frontline states, amid escalating insecurity across parts of the country.

The call followed a point of order raised during plenary by Abdul Ningi, who warned that continued insurgent attacks required urgent and decisive intervention. He suggested that political activities be suspended nationwide or at least in affected states until the security situation improves.

Ningi listed Borno State, Plateau State, Bauchi State, Benue State, Niger State, Sokoto State, Kebbi State and parts of Kano State as areas requiring urgent attention, noting that lawmakers could not continue to treat the situation with routine concern.

The Senate also called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure the release of 416 women, children and elderly persons reportedly abducted by Boko Haram in Borno State since March 30, 2026.

The resolution followed consideration of a motion sponsored by Tahir Monguno and co-sponsored by Ali Ndume and Kaka Lawan, which highlighted renewed attacks on military formations in Monguno and Benisheikh.

During the debate, Ndume warned that insurgents had threatened to disperse the abducted victims if urgent steps were not taken, while Diket Plang raised concerns about the impact of repeated attacks on military personnel and national morale.

In its resolutions, the Senate condemned the attacks on military formations, observed a minute of silence in honour of fallen soldiers, and urged the Chief of Defence Staff and service chiefs to conduct a comprehensive operational and logistical audit of affected bases.

Lawmakers also called on the Armed Forces of Nigeria to strengthen adherence to rules of engagement and international humanitarian law, investigate allegations of civilian harm during operations, and enhance coordination with local communities for credible intelligence support.

The Senate further commended troops of Operation Hadin Kai for their efforts, even as concerns mounted over a video reportedly released by the faction Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad showing abducted victims in Ngoshe, where insurgents warned against rescue attempts.

The latest developments have heightened anxiety in affected communities and renewed calls for decisive action to curb the insurgency, which has persisted in the region for more than a decade despite ongoing military operations.
