The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned new transmission line connections at the Ihovbor corridor to improve power evacuation and enhance stability of the national grid.
The project involves the turn-in-turn-out connections for a the Ihovbor/Beninnd Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission lines, which were completed and commissioned at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2026.
According to TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the development will improve the evacuation of electricity from key generation sources, particularly the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) plants and Azura Power, by increasing transmission efficiency to the national grid.
The company disclosed that the Ihovbor/Benin transmission line is currently carrying about 200 megawatts, while the Ihovbor/Ajaokuta line is transmitting approximately 90 megawatts of electricity.
TCN said the new infrastructure is expected to reduce transmission constraints in the corridor, improve power flow, and strengthen overall grid reliability in affected regions.
The agency described the project as part of broader efforts to modernise and expand Nigeria’s electricity transmission network in response to rising national demand.
It added that the improved evacuation capacity would help reduce stranded generation and support more efficient distribution of power across the grid.
The commissioning is also expected to enhance stability in electricity supply by easing pressure on existing transmission lines and improving coordination between generation and distribution segments of the power sector.
