President Bola Tinubu has congratulated elder statesman and Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti on his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, discipline and dedicated national service.
In a personally signed statement issued on Saturday, Tinubu said his “joy knows no bounds” as Fasoranti marks the centenary milestone on May 11.
The President described the elder statesman as “a metaphor for integrity, honesty, dedicated service to the nation and true leadership,” while commending his lifelong commitment to public service and principled leadership.
Tinubu highlighted Fasoranti’s educational background, noting that he studied at University of Ibadan, the University of Hull and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.
He also praised Fasoranti’s contributions to education through teaching and the establishment of schools, including St. Frances’ Academy founded in honour of his late wife.
On politics, Tinubu described Fasoranti as one of the last surviving disciples of late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo, noting his involvement in the Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria.
The President recalled Fasoranti’s tenure as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983, commending what he called the elder statesman’s integrity and financial prudence.
Tinubu also acknowledged Fasoranti’s role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle during military rule, saying he was among the leading voices demanding a return to democratic governance.
He further praised the Afenifere leader for remaining resilient despite personal tragedies, including the death of his wife in 1991 and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019.
The President thanked Fasoranti for his continued support for the Renewed Hope administration and prayed for his continued good health and long life.
