Abia Police Arrest Officers Over Viral Misconduct Video

The Abia State Police Command has arrested officers featured in a viral social media video showing alleged police misconduct in Uturu.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Police Public Relations Officer Maureen Chinaka said the command immediately launched an investigation after the video surfaced online.

According to the statement, the complainant was contacted while the officers involved were identified, traced and arrested.

The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the officers for possible disciplinary action.

The command assured the public that updates would be provided on the outcome of the investigation.

Isa also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights during police operations.

He warned that misconduct and impunity would not be tolerated, in line with the directives of the Nigeria Police Force leadership.

In the viral video, one of the officers was seen questioning a commuter over possession of three mobile phones at a checkpoint.

The commuter, who recorded the encounter, asked why the officer was not wearing a name tag, saying he could not identify him. Another officer objected to being filmed, while the first officer replied in pidgin, “Make you record am. I no dey fear.”

When the commuter threatened to contact the Inspector-General of Police, the officer reportedly responded, “Oya, call am,” before the encounter escalated into a struggle.
