Methodist Bishop Urges Calm After Court Ruling

The Resident Bishop of the United Methodist Church Nigeria Episcopal Area, Ande Emmanuel, has urged members and supporters of the church to avoid inflammatory statements and actions capable of disrupting public peace.

The bishop made the appeal on Monday in Jalingo while reacting to a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which dismissed an application for stay of execution filed by the Incorporated Trustees of the Global Methodist Church Nigeria.

Bishop Emmanuel described the judgment as an affirmation of the church’s lawful continuity, identity, and trusteeship, adding that the ruling had strengthened confidence in the judiciary and the rule of law.

“We receive this outcome with humility, gratitude to God and deep respect for the judicial process,” he said, cautioning members against treating the judgment as a basis for hostility or triumphalism.

According to him, the legal dispute created uncertainty and emotional strain for many church members, clergy, and congregations, but he commended them for maintaining peace and lawful conduct throughout the process.

The cleric also expressed appreciation to church leaders, legal representatives, ecumenical partners, and members of the global Methodist community for their support during the litigation.

He acknowledged the contributions of international partners and other stakeholders who advocated peaceful resolution and respect for lawful institutions.

Bishop Emmanuel warned against retaliation or intimidation, stressing that legal disagreements should not damage relationships, communities, or the church’s spiritual mission.

He said the church must now focus on healing, rebuilding, evangelism, education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and peacebuilding efforts across the country.

The bishop further urged all parties involved in the dispute to continue pursuing their convictions peacefully and within the framework of the law.
