A health worker, identified as Ojoma Emie, has been killed in an alleged ambush by suspected herdsmen in Ikobi, Apa Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident occurred on Monday morning along the Ikobi-Ugbokpo road as Emie was returning from Ugbokpo town, where he had reportedly gone to purchase medication.
According to community sources, the attackers ambushed him at Ugbobi Junction, an area residents describe as a recurring hotspot for attacks on travellers. The assailants allegedly killed the victim and fled the scene, leaving his body behind.
Residents later discovered the corpse and raised the alarm.
Confirming the incident, the Vice President of the Ikobi Progressive Forum, Dr. Edoh Ofugocho, said residents became concerned after hearing several gunshots from the area.
“Our people heard multiple gunshots and became apprehensive because they knew he had travelled to Ugbokpo. It was later discovered that he had been attacked and killed at Ugbobi Junction,” he said.
Ofugocho described the deceased as a dedicated health worker, husband and father of three, whose death has left the community devastated.
He also lamented what he described as persistent attacks in the area, alleging that residents continue to face security threats while travelling within their communities.
“This route has become a recurring ambush point. Our people can no longer move freely, and residents now live in constant fear,” he said.
The community leader called on security agencies and government authorities to strengthen security in the area and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Emie has since been buried, according to community sources.
