Reps Summon Service Chiefs Over Rising Insecurity

The House of Representatives on Tuesday summoned Nigeria’s service chiefs and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to appear before lawmakers over the worsening security situation across the country.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Sulaiman Gumi, who represents the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State, during plenary.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the persistent wave of attacks by bandits and terrorist groups, which have continued to claim lives and result in the abduction of residents in several parts of the country.

The House said the appearance of the security chiefs and the NSA would provide an opportunity for lawmakers to assess ongoing efforts to address the security challenges and explore measures to strengthen the country’s response to emerging threats.

The summons comes amid growing public concern over insecurity, particularly in the North-West and other regions affected by banditry, terrorism and kidnapping.

In recent months, attacks by armed groups have continued to disrupt communities, leading to renewed calls for more decisive action from security agencies and the Federal Government.

The development also follows increasing demands from some Nigerians for a review of the nation’s security strategy, with critics urging the government to take stronger steps to curb violence and restore public confidence.

The House is expected to engage the security chiefs and the NSA on current operations, challenges facing security agencies and strategies being deployed to tackle insecurity nationwide.
