Bauchi Police Probe Man’s Murder Amid Concerns

A 33-year-old man, Najamu Aminu, was found dead in his room in the Gwallaga area of Bauchi metropolis, prompting a police investigation and raising concerns among residents over the handling of the case.

Aminu’s body was discovered on June 9 in a pool of blood, with residents suspecting he was attacked while asleep. The incident has sparked fear within the community due to the violent nature of the killing.

The case was initially reported to the Township Police Division, whose officers evacuated the body and later released it to the family for burial.

However, the Organisation for African Child Development and Human Rights Protection questioned the police response, alleging that no arrests had been made and that investigators had not returned to the scene to gather additional evidence or interview witnesses.

Speaking to journalists, the group’s Team Lead, Alkasim Muhammad, also questioned the decision to release the body for burial shortly after its recovery and why the case was not immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The organisation called on the Commissioner of Police to establish a special investigation team, order an autopsy, identify and arrest those responsible, and review the actions of the Divisional Police Officer handling the case.

Responding to the concerns, the Bauchi State Police Command said the matter had already been transferred to the SCID for a comprehensive investigation.

Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Abubakar said preliminary inquiries began at the Township Division before the case was escalated. He added that SCID operatives had commenced an in-depth investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and identify all those connected to the crime.

Abubakar said Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu had assured residents that the command would pursue the case thoroughly and ensure justice is served. He also appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist investigators.
