The Kwara State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the beginning of the 1448 Islamic New Year.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, who stated that Tuesday has been designated as the first day of Muharram, the opening month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
The government called on Muslims and residents of the state to reflect on the significance of the Hijrah and its enduring lessons for humanity.
According to the statement, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (Hijrah) symbolizes the values of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and respect for the rights and aspirations of all people.
“Hijrah reminds the world of the evergreen value of tolerance, common humanity, and the right of every person to their legitimate aspirations—whether in matters of faith or everyday life, provided they do not harm others,” the statement said.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq also extended his goodwill message to residents, praying for peace, unity, and prosperity across the state.
“As we commemorate the new Hijrah Year, His Excellency Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq prays that God bless every home, restore peace to our land, and give us the strength to do right by every person,” the statement added.
