Lawyer Slams Okonkwo Over Opposition to Atiku-Amaechi Ticket

Human rights lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has criticized African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo over his opposition to the party’s presidential ticket pairing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar with former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Okonkwo had rejected the choice of Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate, arguing that the vice-presidential slot should go to a candidate from the South-East. He also declared that he would not campaign for Atiku if the region was excluded from the ticket.

Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, Idam accused the actor-turned-politician of pursuing personal interests under the guise of advocating for the South-East.

“On the surface, one might mistake this position for pan-Igbo advocacy. However, the real question lies in what may truly motivate his agitation,” Idam said.

The lawyer suggested that Okonkwo may have once considered himself a potential vice-presidential candidate, describing such an ambition as unrealistic and politically damaging.

According to Idam, Atiku would be unlikely to stake what could be his final presidential bid on a running mate who lacks broad electoral appeal.

He also speculated about Okonkwo’s future political alignment, suggesting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) could become his next destination.

Idam further referenced reports surrounding Okonkwo’s strained relationship with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, although he noted that he could not independently verify the claims.

He concluded by urging the public to closely watch Okonkwo’s political moves, arguing that political loyalty should be guided by principles rather than personal interests.
