SDP Explains Adjournment of Ex-Chairman Gabam’s Trial

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has attributed the adjournment of its criminal case against former National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, to delays in obtaining key financial documents required for the trial.

Speaking with journalists after Wednesday’s court proceedings, SDP National Chairman, Prof. Sodiq Abubakar, said the Magistrate Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, postponed the matter until July 20, 2026, after the party was unable to present a bank statement considered crucial to the case.

According to Abubakar, the party had requested the document from a Nigerian bank, but it was not made available in time for the hearing. As a result, the SDP sought a court subpoena compelling the bank to produce the statement.

“The case was adjourned because we could not obtain one of the key documents to be tendered as evidence, which is the bank statement,” he said.

He explained that the bank informed the party that the document was extensive and required approval from its headquarters before it could be released and certified.

“The bank indicated that the statement contains a large volume of records and needed additional time to process and stamp the documents. They requested one week to make them available,” Abubakar added.

He said the court was informed of the development and subsequently fixed July 20 for the continuation of hearing.

Gabam was arraigned in May 2026 in a case marked DCC/10/2026, over allegations of misappropriating N35 million during his tenure as the party’s national chairman.

The case is expected to resume once the requested financial records are produced before the court.
