Lionel Messi has admitted he was frustrated after missing a penalty in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the FIFA World Cup on Monday.
The Argentina captain failed to convert from the spot during the match but later recovered to score both goals and help Argentina national football team secure all three points.
Speaking after the game, the forward said he was disappointed with the way he took the penalty.
“Today, there was a moment where I was very angry about the penalty because I missed it,” Messi said, according to GOAL.
“I kicked it very badly, and luckily, we were able to turn that situation around, take the lead, and get the three points, which is what’s important.”
Despite the missed opportunity, Messi said Argentina achieved its main objective of winning the match in what he described as a highly competitive tournament.
“Obviously, it was in our plans to get the victory. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, especially with how the World Cup is unfolding,” he said.
“Every game is hard; no one gives away anything.”
The win strengthens Argentina’s position in the tournament as the reigning world champions continue their quest for another World Cup title.
