The Edo State Government says it is set to harness its 72 identified tourism assets to boost the hospitality industry, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth across the state.
Director-General of the Edo State Tourism Agency, Mrs. Vivian Elabor, disclosed this on Wednesday in Benin while briefing journalists ahead of the inaugural Edo Tourism Summit and Fashion Show scheduled for June 29 and 30.
According to Elabor, key tourism attractions in the state include the Benin Moat, the Ososo Carnival, the Kukuruku Hills, cultural festivals in Ubiaja, and several other heritage sites that remain largely untapped.
She said the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo is committed to developing the sector to expand business opportunities and improve residents’ livelihoods.
Elabor noted that tourism development could also help increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), reducing dependence on federal allocations and positioning Edo as a major tourism destination.
The tourism agency boss also stressed the need to preserve the historic Benin Moat, warning that individuals caught dumping refuse in the site would face sanctions.
“Many people do not appreciate the value of the moats. The outside world understands the importance of preserving tourist sites, and we want our people to have the same understanding,” she said.
She added that public awareness campaigns would be intensified to educate residents on the historical and cultural significance of the moats, which were originally built by the ancestors as a form of community protection.
The upcoming summit, themed ‘Edo Tourism: The New Frontier Exhibition and Fashion Show,’ is expected to showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage while promoting tourism and creative industries.
Also speaking, Director of Administration and Supplies, Kushe Ojekhoa, said winners of the fashion show would receive cash prizes, while all participants would be paid participation fees to encourage creativity and support emerging talents.
