The Abia State Government has appealed to residents to cooperate with authorities as enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycle operations begins in designated areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the policy is aimed at improving security and protecting lives and property, despite acknowledging that many residents rely on commercial motorcycle operations for their livelihood.
The government assured the public that the enforcement exercise would be carried out fairly and professionally, stressing that the decision was taken in the overriding interest of all citizens.
It also announced a reduction in the penalty for violating the ban. Defaulters will now pay a fine of N20,000 instead of the previously proposed N50,000.
Under the new policy, all private and commercial motorcycles, as well as tricycles (Keke), must be registered and properly documented. Private motorcycle owners are also prohibited from carrying passengers.
The government said motorcycles impounded during enforcement would be released after owners complete the required registration, verification, documentation and other statutory procedures.
Residents were further encouraged to report any cases of extortion, abuse or misconduct by members of the enforcement task force through the designated government complaint channels.
