The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of compromising its independence, alleging that the electoral body is acting in the interest of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement posted on its verified X account on Tuesday, the opposition party claimed that INEC, under the leadership of Professor Joash Amupitan, has failed to operate as an impartial electoral umpire.
The PDP alleged that selective compliance with court orders, inconsistent implementation of judicial rulings and a lack of transparency in the electronic transmission of election results have undermined public confidence in the commission.
According to the party, these actions have created the impression that INEC is working to preserve the political status quo ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The PDP further argued that public trust in the electoral body has fallen to what it described as a historic low, warning that confidence in the democratic process depends on the existence of an independent and transparent election management body.
“For any democracy to survive an economic depression, the public must believe that their pain can translate into political consequences via the ballot box. That belief requires an independent umpire,” the party said.
The opposition party maintained that restoring confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process would require INEC to demonstrate greater transparency, neutrality and strict adherence to the rule of law.
