Erling Haaland scored a second-half brace as Norway stunned Brazil 3-1 to dump the five-time world champions out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Round of 16 stage.
The Manchester City striker punished a wasteful Brazilian side, extending Norway’s unbeaten record against the South Americans and firing his country into a first-ever World Cup quarter-final.
Brazil started brightly and were awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute after a foul on Matheus Cunha. But Orjan Nyland dived to his right to save Bruno Guimaraes’ spot-kick, and the goalkeeper also denied Vinicius Jr. later in the half to keep the game goalless at the break.
Brazil’s frustration continued early in the second half when substitute Endrick was sent through on goal but dragged his shot wide with only Nyland to beat.
Haaland, quiet for most of the game, came alive in the closing stages. The 25-year-old powered a header home in the 79th minute to give Norway the lead, before arrowing a low shot from just outside the box into the bottom corner in the 90th minute to seal the win.
The double took Haaland to 7 World Cup goals, putting him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe at the top of the tournament’s scoring chart. It was also his 14th consecutive scoring game for Norway.
Neymar Jr. converted a penalty deep into added time for Brazil, but it was only a consolation as the Selecao suffered a sixth straight World Cup knockout defeat to a European nation.
Norway will now face the winner of Mexico vs England in the quarter-finals.
