EFCC Releases Activists After Hours of Questioning

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released activists Randy Peter and Mama Pee after they honoured an invitation from the anti-graft agency at its headquarters in Abuja.

The pair were released shortly after midnight on Wednesday following several hours of questioning and were directed to return to the commission’s office on Thursday, according to their colleague, Justice Cracks.

In a post on X, Justice Cracks said he accompanied the activists to the EFCC headquarters at about 1:00 p.m. on July 15 and remained with them throughout the process.

“My dear brother, @Peter4Nigeria, and my sister, @MamaPee__ were invited by the EFCC. I personally accompanied them there… It was a very long day,” he wrote, adding that they were released at about midnight after spending roughly 11 hours at the commission’s office.

He also shared a video from the EFCC headquarters’ car park while waiting for the activists to be released.

Earlier in the day, concerns had grown over their whereabouts after Esther Umoh, who served as the 2023 campaign photographer for National Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi, disclosed on X that the two activists had remained at the commission’s office hours after honouring the invitation.

The prolonged questioning sparked speculation on social media that the pair had been arrested. However, Justice Cracks later confirmed they had been released and instructed to report back to the EFCC on Thursday.

The EFCC has not publicly stated the reason for inviting the activists.
