Residents and commuters in Ilorin have called on the Kwara State Government to urgently intervene in the rising cases of road accidents and persistent traffic congestion along Asa-Dam Road, particularly around the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)office and the Olam Grains facility.

The appeal follows what locals describe as an alarming pattern of crashes on the stretch, with accidents reportedly occurring almost regularly. Many have sustained injuries, while others have lost property in the repeated incidents.

EMIRATE RADIO 98.5 FM gathered that While speeding and poor enforcement were mentioned, residents pointed to a more visible cause: articulated trailers on business errands to Olam Grains.

According to eyewitnesses, the trailers regularly park and block the major road while waiting for delivery or loading, leaving motorists with little space to navigate and sight the upcoming vehicles.

“From morning till evening, you will see trailers lined up on the expressway in front of Olam Grains,” said Mallam Yusuf Adebayo, a commercial driver. “They occupy almost half the road. Vehicles have to swerve suddenly and that is how most of the accidents happen here. At night it’s worse because there are no warning signs or reflectors.”

Mrs. Bose Jimoh, a trader who frequently visits the NIMC office, said pedestrians are also at risk. “We run between moving cars and trailers just to cross. The trailers sometimes block the walkway completely. It’s very dangerous for women, children and the elderly.”

Beyond the trailer issue, residents cited excessive speeding, poor road markings and absence of traffic control devices as other contributors to the crashes.

They are now urging the Kwara State Government and relevant agencies — including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kwara State Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA), and the Ministry of Works and Transport to act immediately.
