Badagry Declares Seven-Day Mourning For Late Akran

The Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, has declared a seven-day mourning period following the death of the Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi I.

The announcement was made on Tuesday through a statement by Hunpe’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kriko Augustine, with the approval of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“With the approval of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, I officially announce with profound sorrow the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry Kingdom,” the statement read.

The monarch passed away on Monday, January 12, after a long and distinguished reign dedicated to peace, unity, and the preservation of Badagry’s cultural heritage.

Hunpe described the late Akran as a respected custodian of tradition who bridged the kingdom’s history with its future while providing moral guidance to his people.

“In solemn recognition of his life, service, and enduring legacy, I hereby declare seven days of mourning,” Hunpe said, urging residents to reflect on the monarch’s leadership, values, and devotion to Badagry and Nigeria.

The mourning period is intended to honour the late Akran’s lifelong service and the impact he had on the community and the region.

Hunpe also extended condolences to the royal family, the Council of Obas and Chiefs, and the people of Badagry and Lagos State.

The announcement underscores the high esteem in which Aholu Menu Toyi I was held and his lasting contributions to Badagry’s cultural and social development.
