Kwara Polytechnic Remains Shut As Student, Traders Express Worries

Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, remains largely deserted following the state government’s decision to shut down the institution. Recall that the decision followed the escalation of a protest held by students of the institution

A situation report from Emirate FM correspondent, Treasure Ajayi, shows that the school environment records minimal activity, with lecture halls closed and student presence far below normal. The development has continued to raise concerns among students and residents of the host community.

Students who spoke to our correspondent said there has been uncertainty over examination dates, adding that they fear the exams may not take place anytime soon because of the continued lockdown of the institution ordered by the governor. Some students described the situation as frustrating and unsettling, calling on the authorities to provide clear direction on the reopening of the school.

One student, who preferred anonymity, said she is currently stranded on campus. According to her, she had resumed school only a few weeks before the closure and was advised by her parents to remain in school despite the shutdown.

Meanwhile, traders and commercial tricycle operators around the Polytechnic have complained of low patronage since the closure. A Point of Sale operator, who identified herself as Mrs A, said her sales have dropped drastically following the absence of students.

A tricycle operator also lamented the situation, noting that operators now struggle to earn enough to maintain and repair their tricycles due to reduced income.

The traders and transport operators appealed to the state government to reopen the institution as soon as possible, stressing that their livelihoods depend largely on activities generated by the school.

As of the time of this bulletin, the Kwara State Government has not announced a date for the reopening of Kwara State Polytechnic.
