The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, property, and livelihoods in Plateau State as communities prepare for the farming season.
Major General Folunsho Oyinlola, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of “Operation Enduring Peace,” made the statement on Thursday during a strategic stakeholders’ meeting in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. The meeting aimed to promote peaceful coexistence in the state.
According to Oyinlola, Operation Enduring Peace will intensify clearance of criminal elements, increase patrols in flashpoints, and strengthen coordination with other security agencies to eliminate threats across Plateau.
“These kinetic operations, combined with non-kinetic initiatives, are designed to deliver lasting peace,” he said, urging stakeholders to support the military’s efforts to restore stability.
The GOC noted that recent calm in Barkin Ladi is the result of sustained dialogue, conflict mitigation initiatives, and the community’s commitment to peace.
He highlighted emerging threats, including attacks on miners and the influx of cattle into farming communities, describing them as early warning signs that require urgent attention. “We cannot allow Barkin Ladi to relapse into avoidable conflict, especially now that the farming season is commencing,” Oyinlola warned.
As part of non-kinetic measures, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has directed the distribution of fertilizer to farming and herding communities to support agricultural production and reduce tensions.
Oyinlola also praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for deploying an elite Special Forces unit to reinforce security operations. He called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community heads to enforce conflict resolution mechanisms and educate youths against provocative actions such as farm encroachment, cattle poisoning, and livestock attacks.
He further urged residents to report suspicious activities promptly, stressing that troops under Operation Enduring Peace are committed to enforcing peace, upholding justice, and protecting all citizens regardless of ethnicity or religion.
“Our loyalty is to the Constitution and the collective safety of Nigerians. Security is a shared responsibility, and timely intelligence from communities enables decisive action against criminal elements,” Oyinlola added.
