UNILORIN Director Urges Nigerians To Prioritize Health

The University of Ilorin Director of Health Services, Dr. Rasheed Odunola, has urged staff, students, and Nigerians generally to prioritize their health, emphasizing that well-being is essential for productivity and a high-quality life.

Dr. Odunola made the remarks on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, during an interview with the UNILORIN Bulletin in his office.

He explained that maintaining good health enables individuals to perform daily activities effectively, enhances academic performance, and supports overall well-being. He cited the World Health Organization’s 1948 definition of health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being,” noting that health extends beyond the mere absence of disease.

The director highlighted the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, including balanced nutrition, 20–30 minutes of daily exercise, six to seven hours of sleep, and avoiding smoking, illicit drugs, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Dr. Odunola warned that smoking could reduce lifespan by up to 50 percent and excessive alcohol intake can cause liver damage. He also cautioned against risky behaviors such as eating while driving or walking alone at night, which could expose individuals to preventable harm.

He encouraged routine medical check-ups, describing them as vital for early detection and treatment of potential health conditions, while helping reduce long-term medical costs and preserving quality of life.

Commending the university management, Dr. Odunola praised the institution’s policy allowing staff to undergo comprehensive clinical assessments on their birthdays for a nominal fee of ₦1,000.

He urged staff to disclose any health challenges to their departments and the Directorate of Health Services, explaining that such transparency enables the university to provide appropriate support, including light duties, reassignment, or social welfare assistance.

Dr. Odunola emphasized that prioritizing health not only benefits individuals but also strengthens the university community and contributes to a more productive and resilient workforce.

He concluded by reminding all members of the university and the public that proactive health management is a key pillar for personal development and societal progress.
