INEC Chair Visits FCT Polling Units Amid Low Turnout Concerns

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, visited several polling units on Saturday during the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections to monitor the voting process.

At Polling Unit 016 in Area 8, party agents raised concerns over voter apathy and delays in the arrival of sensitive election materials. The All Progressives Congress (APC) agent, Stephen Osadebe, expressed dissatisfaction with the low turnout.

He said the polling unit, which has over 3,000 registered voters, recorded only about 30 voters as of the time of observation, calling for stronger voter mobilization and sensitization ahead of elections.

“Our concern is voter apathy. Sensitization needs to be intensified so people understand the importance of coming out to vote,” Osadebe said, stressing that votes must count for democracy to function effectively.

Field reports indicated that some INEC ad-hoc staff, including National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, were working without basic facilities such as chairs and tables at certain polling units.

One ad-hoc worker described the turnout as moderate but not impressive, saying participation was “not very good, but not very poor.”

Responding to concerns raised by party agents, the INEC Chairman said the commission was committed to ensuring a smooth and orderly electoral process.

He assured stakeholders that efforts were ongoing to address operational challenges and improve the conduct of the elections.

Voting continued across polling units in the FCT as officials monitored compliance with electoral guidelines.
