UniAbuja Expels 28 Students Over Misconduct

The Senate of the University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of 28 students over offences including cult-related activities, examination malpractice, drug possession and threats to life.

The decision was taken at the institution’s 191st Regular Senate Meeting after the consideration of a report by the Student Disciplinary Committee, according to a statement issued in Abuja by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob.

The university said the affected students were found guilty of serious misconduct such as assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, falsification of O’ Level results uploaded for admission, and possession and use of hard drugs.

In a related move, the Senate approved the withdrawal of certificates previously issued to 15 former students who failed to honour repeated invitations from the disciplinary committee.

The statement added that nine students were cleared of wrongdoing after investigations, while 33 others received warnings for offences including hostel racketeering, conspiracy and fighting.

Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, said the university would not compromise on academic standards or campus safety.

“The academic integrity of the university is sacrosanct, and we are determined that anyone who violates it will be appropriately sanctioned,” he said, adding that the goal was not only to enforce discipline but also to promote responsible conduct.

Fawehinmi reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment, noting that the university is strengthening counselling, orientation and student engagement programmes to prevent future infractions.
