A mother and her son escaped death on Wednesday morning after their Lexus SUV somersaulted multiple times along the LASU-Isheri Expressway in Lagos.
The lone accident occurred near the NYSC bus stop as the vehicle, with registration number KJA 39 JT, was travelling from Isheri towards Igando. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver lost control, causing the SUV to overturn three times before coming to a stop amid early morning traffic.
Officials said the occupants were rescued from the wreckage with visible bruises and minor injuries.
LASTMA personnel stationed nearby carried out an emergency response to prevent further casualties, while officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Igando Division secured the scene and managed the crowd.
Family members later arrived and took the victims for medical attention.
To restore traffic flow and prevent secondary crashes, LASTMA collaborated with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to remove the damaged vehicle from the road. The SUV was subsequently handed over to the police for investigation.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed relief that no lives were lost. He urged motorists to avoid excessive speeding and ensure regular vehicle maintenance, particularly of critical components such as brakes.
“Excessive speed, when compounded by mechanical deficiencies, constitutes a dangerous precursor to severe roadway tragedies on major expressways,” Bakare-Oki said.
