Unilorin Seeks Army Lab to Boost Collaboration

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), has urged the Nigerian Army to consider establishing a laboratory on the university’s campus to strengthen institutional collaboration.

He made the appeal on February 23, 2026, while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Army Institute of Science Education and Technology (NAISET), Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin. The team was led by the Acting Commandant, Colonel Abass Ahmed Abubakar, who was on a familiarisation visit.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye, Egbewole described the Nigerian Army as a respected partner of the university and commended its support, particularly in addressing campus security challenges.

He said the long-standing relationship between the two institutions has been mutually beneficial and should be expanded. The Vice Chancellor noted that the university already hosts a Nigerian Air Force laboratory and expressed optimism that the Army could establish a similar facility to deepen research and training ties.

In his remarks, Colonel Abubakar said the visit was aimed at reinforcing cooperation between NAISET and the university and appreciating its continued support.

He commended the institution for providing training opportunities to Army personnel in programmes such as Executive Management Courses and Library and Information Science, among others.

According to him, the quality of instruction has strengthened the capacity of officers and soldiers to carry out their duties effectively. He also thanked the university management and the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies for their collaboration, as well as the University Librarian for granting military personnel access to library facilities for practical training.
