Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has described Arsenal’s David Raya as the most improved player in the Premier League following his strong performances this season.
Schmeichel made the comments after Arsenal’s 2-1 London derby victory over Chelsea, a match in which Raya played a key role in securing the win. The Spanish goalkeeper has established himself as Arsenal’s first choice since completing a permanent move from Brentford in 2024 after an initial loan spell.
Speaking to Viaplay, Schmeichel admitted he initially questioned Arsenal’s decision to sign Raya while Aaron Ramsdale was still at the club. “I did not understand when Raya came from Brentford to join Arsenal, because they had Aaron Ramsdale and he was doing very well,” he said.
“I was very critical at the time. You can’t have two number ones — you have to choose one. Why bring Raya in? But I think he is probably the most improved player in the Premier League over the last three seasons.”
Raya has since become a regular starter for Arsenal, earning praise for his consistency and performances in goal as the club competes at the top end of the league. His development has helped solidify Arsenal’s defensive stability this campaign.
