UI Student Dead, After Alleged Insecticide Ingestion

A 300-level student of the University of Ibadan has died after reportedly ingesting a substance suspected to be insecticide, university and hospital sources confirmed.

The incident occurred on Sunday night at Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, where the student was found unconscious and in distress on the ground floor by another student. He was later reported to have admitted taking a substance identified as “Sniper,” a popular brand of insecticide.

He was rushed to the university clinic for initial treatment and stabilisation before being referred to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for advanced care. Medical personnel placed him on life support, but he was pronounced dead later.

Public Relations Officer of UCH, Funmi Adetuyibi, confirmed the death when contacted on Tuesday. “Yes, it is true. He was brought to the hospital. He is dead,” she said.

Authorities have not released the student’s identity, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

The university management has yet to issue an official statement on the development.
