Taraba Govt Approves N3bn to End TSU Strike

The prolonged industrial action at Taraba State University may soon be resolved after the Taraba State government approved a N3 billion intervention to settle outstanding entitlements owed to university staff.

Governor Agbu Kefas announced the financial package during a visit to the university campus in Jalingo on Thursday, in what observers describe as a significant step toward ending the ongoing strike.

The industrial action, led by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at the institution, has disrupted academic activities for months.

Addressing members of the university community, the governor approved the immediate release of N200 million as part of the settlement and authorised monthly payments of N100 million beginning in April until the accumulated arrears are cleared.

Kefas, who serves as Visitor to the university, also signed documents authorising the disbursement of the funds in the presence of union leaders, including the institution’s ASUU chairman, Mbave Joshua Garba.

Members of the university community welcomed the intervention, describing it as a positive move toward restoring normal academic activities.

Meanwhile, the university’s Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions has scheduled a congress to deliberate on the government’s offer.

Some lecturers said the decision to suspend the strike would depend on the outcome of the meeting, though observers expect the unions to consider resuming lectures if the agreement is accepted.

If the strike is called off, academic activities at the university are expected to resume, bringing relief to thousands of students affected by the disruption.
