The Ondo State Police Command has dismissed claims that bandits are operating in the state, clarifying that individuals involved in kidnappings and killings are ordinary criminals.
Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal made the statement on Monday in Akure, during a show of force conducted by security agencies in response to recent criminal activities.
Lawal emphasised that those apprehended in connection with violent crimes are not bandits. “Let me quickly debunk that issue of four bandits. We don’t have bandits in Ondo State. We have criminals, not bandits. Two suspected logistics suppliers to all those criminals and kidnappers were arrested along the Eleyowo and Iluabo axes,” he said.
The police commissioner’s remarks come amid growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the state, particularly in communities along the Akure Airport corridor.
These areas have previously experienced killings and kidnappings, prompting protests by local youths demanding stronger security measures.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa recently reinforced the position that no bandits have operated in Ondo State since the 2022 Owo massacre, highlighting that the state’s security challenges are driven by criminal elements.
Lawal added that law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing suspects and dismantling criminal networks responsible for violent incidents in the state.
The police have increased patrols and joint operations across vulnerable areas to prevent further attacks and reassure residents.
Authorities continue to urge communities to report suspicious activities and cooperate with security operatives to curb crime.
Officials emphasised that distinguishing between organised banditry and criminal acts is crucial for targeting law enforcement responses effectively.
