Four Killed in Ijebu-Ode Road Accident

At least four people were killed on Monday night in a collision on the Ijebu-Imushin stretch of the Ijebu Ode-Ore Expressway.

The accident involved a white Toyota Hiace bus (BDJ482XC) and a blue MAN Diesel truck (RSH969XC) owned by Julius Berger. It occurred around 11:16 p.m. when the bus reportedly collided with the truck being towed.

According to preliminary reports, the towing chain snapped, and the speeding bus rammed into the stationary truck. The driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, leaving the truck behind.

Odunsi Afolabi, Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the crash, attributing it to excessive speed by the bus driver.

“Regrettably, all four individuals involved—two men and two women—sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene,” Afolabi said.

He added that the FRSC rescue team arrived within eight minutes of the alert, and the bodies were evacuated to the State Hospital Mortuary in Ijebu Ode.

The Nigerian Police Force, Imushin Division, has taken custody of the vehicles and the case for further investigation.

Akinwunmi Fasakin, the FRSC Sector Commander, urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits, especially at night, and to ensure that towing equipment meets safety standards.

He emphasized that compliance with traffic regulations and proper towing safety could prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns over road safety on Nigeria’s highways, particularly involving commercial vehicles and night travel.
