The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into eight suspected oil thieves in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following their arrest by the Nigerian Navy.
The suspects were handed over to the EFCC by the Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder on March 23, 2026, the Commission said in a post on its official X handle.
According to the EFCC, the suspects were initially apprehended on March 22 by the Navy’s Anti-Crude Oil Theft team during patrols around Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo communities.
Authorities said the suspects were intercepted alongside two boats carrying approximately 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
Speaking at the handover, a representative of the Naval Base Commander, Lt. Commander J.J. Jerome, said the operation was based on intelligence reports of illegal activities in the area.
“On March 21 at about 22:15 hours, the patrol team departed the base for routine operations. Around 01:15 hours the following day, they intercepted two wooden boats laden with products suspected to be illegally refined AGO,” Jerome said.
He added that armed individuals escorting the boats fled upon sighting the naval team, while eight suspects were arrested in connection with the operation.
Jerome noted that the handover followed established procedures for arresting and prosecuting maritime-related offences.
Receiving the suspects on behalf of the EFCC, official Chioma Emerole commended the Navy for its collaboration in combating economic crimes.
She added that the EFCC would conduct further investigations and ensure that anyone found culpable would face prosecution.
