The United States has intercepted and seized an Iranian cargo vessel accused of attempting to bypass restrictions near Iran’s ports, according to Donald Trump, in a development that has heightened tensions between the two countries.
Trump said the vessel was issued repeated warnings to stop but failed to comply. He stated that a U.S. Navy ship disabled the vessel by firing into its engine room after the crew ignored instructions to halt.
Video footage released by U.S. authorities reportedly captured personnel warning the ship’s crew to vacate the engine room before the disabling action was carried out.
In response, Iran’s military warned it would retaliate. Iranian media outlets later reported drone activity targeting U.S. naval vessels, although there were no confirmed reports of damage or casualties.
Meanwhile, Washington has dispatched a delegation led by JD Vance to Pakistan for talks aimed at easing tensions, though it remains unclear whether Iran will participate.
An Iranian government spokesperson said no decision had been taken on attending a new round of negotiations and confirmed there were currently no concrete plans for further talks.
The incident comes as a fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran is set to expire on Wednesday, with analysts warning that prospects for a diplomatic breakthrough remain uncertain.
