EU Launches €4.5m Peace Initiative in Sokoto

The European Union has launched a €4.5 million conflict prevention and resilience project in Sokoto State aimed at tackling insecurity, climate-related challenges, displacement, and economic vulnerability.

The initiative, known as RECAP  Resilience, Engagement and Conflict Prevention for At-Risk Populations’ Protection in Sokoto State was unveiled on Wednesday during an stakeholders’ meeting in Sokoto.

The 18-month programme is funded by the EU and implemented by Action Against Hunger Nigeria in partnership with International Alert and Save The Child Initiative. It will cover 10 local government areas and is expected to benefit more than 537,000 residents.

Speaking at the event, Xenia Stoll said the project demonstrates the EU’s commitment to peacebuilding, social cohesion, and human security in northwestern Nigeria.

“Through the RECAP project we jointly commit to conflict prevention, social cohesion and human security in Northwest Nigeria,” she said, adding that the programme would address root causes of violence, including exclusion, competition over resources, and economic marginalisation.

Representing Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir, Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Umar, described the intervention as timely, citing the state’s growing challenges linked to insecurity, climate pressure, and resource-based conflicts.

According to him, the project’s focus on dialogue, livelihoods, water governance, mental health, and psychosocial support reflects a deeper understanding of the factors driving conflict and vulnerability in affected communities.

Umar also assured that the Sokoto State Government would provide institutional backing to ensure effective implementation and community participation throughout the project.

Also speaking, Thierno Samba Diallo stressed the importance of inclusive and locally driven peacebuilding efforts, noting that the intersection of conflict, poverty, displacement, and climate stress requires sustainable community-based solutions.

The RECAP initiative forms part of the EU’s broader partnership with Sokoto State, which includes humanitarian support, political engagement, collaboration with civil society groups, and partnerships with traditional and religious institutions to promote peace and development.
