The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) traditional khaki uniform with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting local production.
Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande disclosed this on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
According to the minister, the decision is intended to support Nigeria’s textile industry by ensuring government spending benefits local manufacturers and artisans.
“It’s Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, and we have a textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” Olawande said.
He explained that the new uniforms would be produced locally, creating more opportunities for indigenous textile producers while encouraging local craftsmanship.
The minister also revealed that the Federal Government is reviewing the NYSC deployment process to ensure corps members are posted in line with their academic qualifications and professional skills.
The planned reforms, he said, are part of efforts to make the NYSC scheme more impactful while supporting economic growth through increased patronage of locally made products.
