Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) was the right political decision for him, declaring that he had been in the “wrong party” while he was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Akpabio made the remark on Friday during the inauguration of access roads to the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in the Karsana District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), held as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.
Responding to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who described him as an “uncommon performer” during his time in the PDP, Akpabio urged APC members to disregard the comment, noting that it referred to a period before the ruling party was formed.
“I was already more than seven years into my tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom before the APC came into existence. A progressive-minded person like me should belong to a progressive family. When APC was formed, I realised I was in the wrong party called PDP, so I left and joined the progressives,” he said.
The Senate President also claimed that the PDP had become divided, describing Wike as the “national leader of the winning faction” of the opposition party.
Earlier, Akpabio recalled Wike’s visit to Akwa Ibom during his tenure as governor, saying the FCT minister had admired one of the state’s underground drainage projects and expressed confidence that he would achieve similar feats if elected governor of Rivers State.
According to Akpabio, Wike fulfilled that promise by delivering infrastructure projects in Rivers, adding that infrastructure development had become part of the minister’s “DNA.”
His comments come days after he criticised the PDP at another public event in Abuja, where he questioned the party’s continued relevance and urged Wike to allow it to “die.”
