Nollywood actor and director Ikechukwu Mitchel Ogbonna, has broken his silence over the death of his close friend and colleague, Alex Ekubo, describing the loss as one of the most painful experiences of his life.

Ekubo died on May 12, 2026, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos after complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer, according to his family. Ogbonna had remained silent throughout the funeral, with many interpreting it as a private way of mourning.

In an emotional Instagram post shared on Tuesday, the actor revealed that he had struggled to come to terms with the loss over the past two months.

“On May 11, I lost my best friend and brother, Alexx. Nothing prepares you for a loss like that,” he wrote, adding that the experience had changed his understanding of death and grief.

Ogbonna said he and Ekubo had shared dreams of growing old together, building businesses, making films, travelling the world and raising their families. He admitted they never imagined one of them would die so soon, but said he had found comfort in his faith despite the unanswered questions surrounding the tragedy.

Reflecting on his friend’s life, the actor said Ekubo would be remembered not for his achievements or possessions but for his kindness, generosity and the positive impact he had on others. He described him as someone who “loved, gave, laughed loudly and believed in people.”

Ogbonna said the loss had reshaped his outlook on life, urging people to cherish their loved ones, forgive quickly and live intentionally because life is fragile and unpredictable.

He concluded the tribute by thanking Ekubo for his friendship and unwavering support, promising to honour his memory by continuing to pursue purpose and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

“Until we meet again, my brother. Rest well. I love you, always,” he wrote.
