Reactions have continued to trail the visit of Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate  Peter Obi edo state despite an earlier warning by Governor Monday Okpebholo over visits by the opposition figure.

Okpebholo had, in July 2025, warned Obi against visiting the state without prior notification and official security clearance. The warning drew criticism from some Nigerians, who argued that Obi, as a citizen, had the right to visit any part of the country.

Obi visited Benin City on Wednesday to join Catholic faithful, clergymen and other dignitaries at funeral activities for the late Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze.

Videos circulating online showed large crowds of supporters gathering along the streets as Obi’s convoy made its way to the Holy Cross Cathedral.

The development sparked fresh discussion on social media, with some users questioning whether the governor would respond to Obi’s presence in the state.

Arise Television presenter Rufai Oseni, in a post on X, wrote: “Dear Okpebholo, Obi is in Edo oooo.”

Social commentator Benkingsley Nwashara also said Obi’s visit was not publicly announced as a political event but attracted residents after news of his presence spread.

Another social media commentator, Manju Vic, recalled the governor’s earlier warning and said Obi nevertheless received a warm welcome from residents.

An X user, Freeman, said the crowd was excited to see the former Anambra State governor, adding that many residents gathered to take photographs with him and that the crowd made it difficult for him to enter the venue.

Obi’s visit comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections and renewed public debate over political movements and security arrangements in Edo State.
