Diri Defends Choice of Akpe as Bayelsa Deputy Governor

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has defended his decision to appoint Peter Akpe as his deputy, saying the choice has been justified by Akpe’s performance and acceptance by his people.

Diri spoke on Sunday at a reception organised by the Ebedebiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area to honour Akpe.

The governor said the large turnout at the event demonstrated the deputy governor’s popularity and acceptance in his community.

Diri described Akpe as a humble and capable public servant who had remained connected to his roots. He said his decision to appoint him was guided by both his competence and loyalty.

“I believe I made no mistake that I zeroed in on Akpe. Today’s event confirms my decision to appoint him as my deputy,” Diri said.

The governor also urged the people to promote initiatives that foster unity and development, while avoiding actions that could cause division.

Responding, Akpe thanked Diri for the confidence reposed in him and the opportunity to serve as deputy governor. He said working with the governor had taught him the values of patience, accommodation and peaceful engagement.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, who chaired the event, commended Diri for choosing Akpe. He said the deputy governor had gained extensive experience in governance, having served as a councillor, administrator, lawmaker, Chief of Staff and now deputy governor.

Lokpobiri said Bayelsa West Senatorial District was proud of Akpe’s performance and pledged continued support for the Diri administration.

Other speakers, including the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, Senator Konbowei Benson and former Deputy Governor Peremobowei Ebebi, described Akpe as competent, principled, humble and open-minded. They also expressed support for the state government’s programmes.
