Davido Reveals He Was Once Broke Despite Wealthy Background
Nigerian singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that he experienced financial hardship during the early stages of his music career despite coming from a wealthy family.
Davido made the disclosure during a recent episode of the Uncut Podcast, where he explained that his debut single, Back When, was inspired by his personal experiences of being broke and rejected.
According to the singer, he faced financial difficulties after leaving home in defiance of his father, billionaire businessman Deji Adeleke, who wanted him to focus on his education rather than pursue a career in music.
Davido said he once found himself without money while some of his friends enjoyed the privileges that came with wealthy families.
“My song ‘Back When’ was inspired by a true experience. There was a time I was broke. I had rich friends with rich parents who lived in mansions in Ikoyi with police escorts. But I had no money,” he said.
The singer has previously spoken about his decision to pursue music despite his family’s expectations. His early career eventually produced major hits and established him as one of Nigeria’s leading Afrobeats artists.
