Seven Killed in Helicopter Crash in Northern Kenya

Seven people, including six tourists and a pilot, have been killed after a helicopter crashed in Samburu County, northern Kenya.

The aircraft crashed at about 9:13 a.m. local time on Wednesday after taking off from the Loisaba Wildlife Reserve for a sightseeing flight, according to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.

Fredrick Kabunge, Director of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department, confirmed that all seven people on board died.

“There were seven people on board the helicopter, one pilot and six passengers,” Kabunge said.

The helicopter came down near the foot of Mount Ololokwe, a prominent tourist attraction and sacred site for the Samburu people. Images from the scene showed thick smoke and flames rising from the wreckage.

Authorities had not released the nationalities of the tourists as of Wednesday afternoon. The cause of the crash was also yet to be determined.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said an investigation had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Kenya Red Cross said emergency teams from several agencies were deployed to the crash site as rescue and recovery operations continued.

The crash comes months after another helicopter accident in western Kenya in March that killed six people, including a serving member of parliament.
