The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, eight days after he announced his resignation from the position.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, resigned as Speaker on August 17, 2026, after which Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency, was elected to lead the House.

Following the development, the Assembly suspended Agbebaku indefinitely and removed two other principal officers, Majority Leader Jonathan Ibhamawu and Deputy Majority Leader Addeh Emankhu Isibor.

Ibhamawu was replaced by Ojiezele Osezua Sunday, while Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene replaced Isibor as Deputy Majority Leader.

However, at Monday’s plenary, the Assembly converted Agbebaku’s earlier resignation to an impeachment.

The new Speaker, Idaiye, said the impeachment notice was signed by 17 lawmakers and formally presented by the Majority Leader during the previous sitting.

Idaiye said the House took the decision because Agbebaku’s resignation letter had not been formally presented and documented after his suspension. He maintained that Agbebaku was impeached and did not resign from office.

The motion for the impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by the member representing Etsako Central Constituency, Ahmed Waziri.

The Speaker also directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession, warning that security agencies could be invited if he failed to comply with the directive or respond to the Assembly.
