The Obbo-Ayegunle community in Kwara State and Eda Oniyo in Ekiti State have traded accusations over an attack linked to a longstanding dispute over ownership of land where members of Obbo-Ayegunle have settled.

The communities gave conflicting accounts of an incident on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Obbo-Ayegunle accused residents of Eda Oniyo of invading its farmlands and threatening farmers, while Eda Oniyo alleged that Obbo-Ayegunle residents attacked its farmers with weapons.

In a statement, President of the Obbo Descendants Forum, Ade Ogun, appealed to the Ekiti State Government to intervene and urge the traditional ruler of Eda Oniyo, Oba Julius Awolola, and his subjects to end what he described as continued aggression.

Ogun alleged that eight men from Eda Oniyo, led by a man identified as “Ojo Eda,” invaded Obbo farmlands and threatened to kill farmers who returned to the disputed area. He said the incident contradicted an agreement reached at a recent meeting in Ado-Ekiti.

However, the National President of Eda Oniyo Progressives, Dr Rufus Ajayi, rejected the allegation. He claimed that about 35 people from Obbo-Ayegunle, armed with cutlasses and guns, attacked farmers in Eda Oniyo and attempted to drive them from the area.

Ajayi said the incident was reported to Ekiti State Governor’s Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana (retd.), who subsequently contacted the police.

He maintained that the disputed land belonged to Eda Oniyo, saying Obbo-Ayegunle residents had been permitted by their forefathers to settle there but were now attempting to claim the land.

Both communities appealed to the Ekiti State Government to intervene and prevent further violence. Ogundana could not be reached for comment as of press time
