Fireboy DML Recalls Culture Shock After Moving to Lagos

Afrobeats singer Adedamola Adefolahan also known as Fireboy DML has recounted the culture shock he experienced after relocating to Lagos in 2016 to pursue a career in music.

Speaking during a recent livestream, the singer said he was initially frightened by what he encountered after arriving in the city, particularly in Surulere.

Fireboy recalled seeing people experiencing mental health crises, dead bodies and suspected cultists within his first few weeks in Lagos.

He also said the appearance of some residents contributed to his initial fear of the city.

“I was so scared the first time I came to Lagos in 2016, in Surulere. People’s eyes were so red, and they looked scary,” he said.

“In two weeks, I saw someone run mad, dead bodies and cultists. Now, I also look like those scary people,” he added.

Despite the experience, Fireboy said he chose not to give up on his ambition and eventually adapted to life in Lagos, which has since become an important part of his musical journey.
