Police officers fired tear gas on Tuesday morning to disperse residents, journalists and political figures gathered at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos for a memorial commemorating victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.
Those affected included the African Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate, Funso Doherty.
The memorial was organised by the Enough is Enough movement to honour those who lost their lives during the protests against police brutality in 2020.
The event was disrupted before participants could lay wreaths at the tollgate, as officers deployed to the scene fired tear gas canisters to disperse the gathering.
A video shared by TheCable showed participants scrambling for safety as the tear gas spread across the area.
The police action prevented the wreath-laying ceremony from proceeding as planned.
