Illegal mining activities are reportedly intensifying in parts of Taraba State despite the state government’s suspension of mining operations and an ongoing embargo, raising concerns over security and environmental safety.

Investigations shows an influx of suspected illegal miners into Mayo Kam village in Kusum Ward, Bali Local Government Area.

The miners are reportedly arriving from different parts of Nigeria, including Zamfara State, as well as foreign countries such as Libya and Egypt. They are allegedly involved in unauthorised mining of minerals locally known as Wul and Kuza.

Community sources said the growing presence of the miners has heightened concerns over insecurity, environmental degradation and the ability of authorities to enforce the mining embargo.

Although residents described the influx as significant, the exact number of miners could not be independently verified.

The development comes despite repeated suspensions of mining activities by the Taraba State Government, with the embargo still in force.

The renewed mining activities have raised concerns about possible security risks to host communities, as well as the environmental impact of unregulated mining.

Authorities have yet to publicly provide details on any fresh enforcement measures taken in response to the reported influx.
