Edo Assembly Speaker Agbebaku Impeached, Deputy Takes Over

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has reportedly been impeached by lawmakers during plenary on Monday, August 17, 2026.

Agbebaku’s removal came during the Assembly’s sitting, although the circumstances surrounding the impeachment were not immediately clear.

Osawmonyi Atu, representing Orhionmwon I Constituency, has reportedly been elected as the new Speaker of the Assembly.

He defeated the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the January 2025 election.

Details of the allegations against Agbebaku, the process leading to his removal and the number of lawmakers who supported the impeachment were not immediately available at the time of filing this report.

Further details are expected as the Edo State House of Assembly provides more information on the leadership change.
