Five Die in Head-On Crash on Lagos-Badagry Expressway

Five men have died in a road crash involving a Toyota Camry and an Iveco truck along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday near Sawmill, close to Mowo Bus Stop. The vehicles involved were a Toyota Camry with registration number FKJ 630KS and an Iveco truck marked T28081 LA.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said LASEMA received a distress call about the incident at about 5:16am.

He said the agency deployed its Dolphin Team from the Igando Base to the scene, where responders found that the two vehicles had collided head-on.

Preliminary findings indicated that excessive speed and reckless driving by the Camry driver may have caused the crash. The driver reportedly lost control, crossed into the opposite lane and collided with the oncoming truck.

“Regrettably, the impact of the collision resulted in the death of five adult males who were occupants of the Toyota Camry,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

Emergency responders recovered the bodies and handed them over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further action. Personnel from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA, the FRSC and the Nigeria Police Force participated in the operation.

Two tow trucks were deployed to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the expressway. LASEMA said the recovery operation was completed and the vehicles were taken to Morogbo Police Division, while the road was reopened to traffic.

Oke-Osanyintolu condoled with the victims’ families and urged motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and other unsafe driving practices, particularly during periods of poor visibility. He stressed that compliance with traffic regulations was essential to preventing avoidable deaths on Lagos roads.
