De Gea Sends Message to Man United After Hull Defeat

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has urged the club to remain focused on the season despite their 2-0 defeat to Hull City in Saturday’s Premier League opener.

The defeat gave Manchester United a disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scoring for Hull.

De Gea reacted to the result in a post on X, reminding the club that the season is a long campaign rather than a single match.

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint. It’s not how it starts, it’s how it ends,” the former United goalkeeper wrote.

Meanwhile, United manager Michael Carrick admitted that conceding twice from set pieces was particularly frustrating and an area the team needed to improve.

“Conceding two goals is frustrating. Set-plays have been something we’ve been quite effective at over time, and they determined the outcome of the game today,” Carrick said.

The former United midfielder said there were positive aspects to his side’s performance but acknowledged that the team needed to address its weaknesses.

Carrick added that the defeat should not affect the players’ mentality, with the focus already shifting to the next fixture.

“We know one game doesn’t alter the whole trajectory of our efforts, but we have to be aware of what we need to improve,” he said.

United will now look to respond in their next Premier League fixture as they seek to recover from their opening-day setback.
