The Kogi State Police Command says a joint security operation rescued 21 kidnap victims, including 15 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, after a gun battle with suspected kidnappers that left four suspects dead.

Commissioner of Police Naziru Kankarofi disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, saying security agencies launched an immediate rescue mission after receiving reports of the abduction.

According to Kankarofi, an emergency meeting involving the Nigerian Army, the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) was convened to coordinate the operation.

He said security operatives, supported by local vigilantes and hunters familiar with the terrain, traced the kidnappers to their hideout after an intensive search.

The operation culminated on Monday when security forces stormed the kidnappers’ camp, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

Kankarofi said the kidnappers were overpowered during the operation, resulting in the rescue of all 15 corps members and six other abducted victims.

He added that one corps member and one civilian sustained gunshot wounds to their legs during the rescue and are receiving treatment.

The commissioner said the victims were abducted on the Itobe-Ajaokuta Highway after armed men attacked vehicles travelling along the route and forced passengers into the bush.

He confirmed that four suspected kidnappers were killed during the gun battle, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds. Security operatives have continued search operations to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Kankarofi described the incident as an isolated case, assuring residents and travellers that security agencies remain on alert and that efforts are ongoing to maintain peace and safety across Kogi State.
